Costanzo Di Girolamo Professor Emeritus of Romance Philology and Linguistics Appointed in 2019 |
Born in Naples on June 9, 1948, in July 1970 he obtained a degree in General Arts from the University of Naples, discussing a dissertation in Romance Philology. From September 1970- September 1972 he held a temporary lectureship in Romance Philology at that same University; from 1972-1974 he was a Lecturer in Italian Language and Literature in the Department of Italian at McGill University (Montreal), then from 1974-1979 Assistant Professor of Medieval Romance Literatures in the Graduate School of the Romance Language Department at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore); while on leave from 1977-79 he was a Fellow of the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti (Florence). From 1977, he was untenured Associate Professor of Theory of Literature in the Department of Philology at the University of Calabria, then tenured Associate Professor of the same subject from 1984-86, when he took up the position of untenured Full Professor of Romance Philology in the Department of Linguistics at the same University. Since 1989 he is Full Professor of the same subject in the Department of Modern philology at the University of Naples Federico II. From 2004 to 2016 he has chaired the PhD School in Classical, Philological and Literary Sciences and the PhD Programme in Modern Philology; from 2013 to 2016, the PhD Programme in Philology. He has researched into Occitan, Catalan and Italian philology, Romance versification, contemporary Italian literature, literay theory, IT applied to philological research. He has been an advisor for the sectors of philology, criticism and literary theory to the publishing houses Einaudi (1984-87) and Bollati Boringhieri (1987-1996). He has edited a number of collective works. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the journals Modern Language Notes (1975-79) and L’asino d'oro (1990-94). From 2005-2008 he was President of the Italian Association of Catalan Studies. Since 1989 he is the General Editor of the Collezione di testi siciliani dei secoli XIV e XV, since 2008 the Editor of the ejournal Lecturae tropatorum; since 2009 is in the Scientific Committee of Enthymema; since 2010 in the Scientific Committee of Revue des langues romanes; since 2020, in the Scientific Committee of the editorial collection Biblioteca medievale. Since 2012, is Co-editor of the Bollettino del Centro di studi filologici e linguistici siciliani. He coordinates the Rialc: Computerised Repertory of Old Catalan Literature, set up with funds from the prin 1997-1999 and 1999-2001; in 2002 he set up the Rialto: Computerised Repertory of Troubadour and Occitan Literature, with funds from the prin 2001-2003 and 2003-2005.
